Differential Diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome

 

It is important to exclude other diseases that may mimic symptoms and signs of polycystic ovary Syndrome. Which diseases should be excluded from the diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome?;

SUBGROUPS OF POLYCYSTIC OVARY SYNDROME

GROUP-A

CUSHING’S SYNDROME

In addition to the symptoms and signs which are seen in group-A of polycystic ovary syndrome,  particular weight gain of the trunk and face (central obesity) and hypertension and also thinning of the skin which causes easy bruising, purple or red striae on the trunk are the signs of Cushing's Syndrome. Cushing’s syndrome is diagnosed by hormone tests.

LOCAH (Late onset congenital adrenal hyperplasia)

Women with LOCAH may present same symptoms and signs which are seen in group-A of polycystic ovary syndrome. LOCAH is diagnosed by hormone tests.

ARRHENOBLASTOMA

Arrhenoblastoma is an ovarian tumor which causes same symptoms seen in group-A of polycystic ovary syndrome, particularly excessive hair growth and alopecia. Arrhenoblastoma is diagnosed by ultrasound examination and hormone tests.

HYERPROLACTINEMIA

Women may present with galactorrhea, in addition to the symptoms and signs which are seen in group -A of polycystic ovary syndrome. Hyperprolactinemia is diagnosed by hormone tests.

THYROID GLAND DYSFUNCTION

Particularly, hypothyroidism may mimic the symptoms and signs which are seen in group-A of polycystic ovary syndrome.  Thyroid gland dysfunction is diagnosed by hormone tests.

GROUP-B

HYPERPROLACTINEMIA

Women may present with galactorrhea, in addition to the symptoms and signs which are seen in group -B of polycystic ovary syndrome. Hyperprolactinemia is diagnosed by hormone tests.

THYROID GLAND DYSFUNCTION

Especially, hypothyroidism may mimic the symptoms and signs which are seen in group-B of polycystic ovary syndrome and, in addition, alopecia may or may not be present. Thyroid gland dysfunction is diagnosed by hormone tests.

GROUP-C
