Insulin-Sugar metabolism and polycystic ovary syndrome

 

Insulin resistance, may be seen in all of the subgroups, which leads to hyperinsulinemia. Insulin resistance have a function in the mechanism of symptoms and signs in women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

In addition, insulin resistance is a condition which predisposes to glucose intolerance and diabetes mellitus.

For these reasons, insulin resistance should be investigated in all women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

The most significant sign of insulin resistance is increased abodominal fat tissue. The Inreased abdominal fat can be measured by  waist to hip ratio.

Insulin resistance may be seen in thin women, who are not obese, with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Waist to hip ratio is an important indicator of insulin resistance, independently of body weight, especially in thin women with polycystic ovary syndrome.
